ICC Sydney and KARI Foundation collaborate to ensure culture drives change for staff and events

Today Aunty Maxine, Anna, and I had the honor of exclusively collaborating with ICC Sydney to create the culturally inclusive Yarning Circles event. KARI, being a long-time partner of ICC Sydney, saw this as a valuable opportunity to deepen their relationship and introduce visitors to the traditions of the revered Elders and the broader Aboriginal community.

The New South Wales Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Treaty, The Hon. David Harris, welcomed the activation, recognizing its significance in connecting visitors to the rich culture of First Nations People. He emphasized that sharing stories of people and place was central to the government's approach to reconciliation, and ICC Sydney's Yarning Circles, in partnership with KARI, provided a compelling opportunity to support this journey.

NAIDOC Week, a time to recognize the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, focused this year on the theme 'For Our Elders.' This theme highlighted the fundamental role Elders play in First Nations communities.

The Yarning Circles officially kicked off, with sessions scheduled for the first Tuesday of every month until December 2023. These sessions aimed to build cultural awareness among ICC Sydney's team members by introducing them to various traditional Aboriginal practices, including weaving, artifact making, dance, and storytelling. Today’s weaving workshop provided the venue team with a unique opportunity to learn the ancient art of weaving directly from Aboriginal artists. It allowed them not only to practice this skill but also to engage in conversations and learn from the artists' stories and experiences.

ICC Sydney's commitment to fostering a connection with First Nations Elders and their knowledge through Yarning Circles exemplified their dedication to reconciliation. The initiative aimed to create a bridge between the venue's team members and the vibrant cultural heritage of the Gadigal people and other Traditional Owners of the land. By embracing the wisdom of the Elders and their contemporary lived experiences, ICC Sydney hoped to inspire event planners to engage KARI and provide attendees with an enriching and dynamic cultural experience.

Through initiatives like Yarning Circles, ICC Sydney aimed to create an inclusive and respectful space that celebrated the rich diversity and heritage of Australia's First Nations Peoples. As the Yarning Circles continued to unfold, it was clear that ICC Sydney was taking significant strides towards fostering genuine reconciliation and deepening the understanding and appreciation of First Nations cultures among its team members and visitors.

Participating in cultural celebrations plays a vital role in fostering a sense of understanding, appreciation, and respect for different cultures. At St Bernard's School, Isaac recently had the opportunity to take part in his first NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) celebration. This year's theme, 'For Our Elders,' was brought to life through a series of engaging activities that allowed Isaac and his fellow students to gain a deeper understanding of Aboriginal culture. Notably, the presence of Aunty Emma, Aunty Therese, and Uncle Frank enriched the event by sharing their invaluable knowledge and wisdom with the school community.

NAIDOC celebrations are an annual event in Australia, dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The chosen theme for this year, 'For Our Elders,' focuses on paying tribute to the wisdom, guidance, and contributions of the Indigenous elders within these communities.

During the NAIDOC celebration at St Bernard's School, Isaac and his peers had the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities designed to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal culture. These activities were carefully curated to provide a holistic experience, encompassing art, storytelling, traditional games, and more.

Art is an integral part of culture, serving as a means of storytelling and cultural preservation. Isaac and his classmates had the chance to create their own artworks inspired by traditional Indigenous techniques and symbols. Through this hands-on experience, they learned about the significance of various symbols, such as the boomerang, dot painting, and dreaming tracks.

Aunty Emma, Aunty Therese, and Uncle Frank, respected members of the local Aboriginal community, graciously shared their knowledge and wisdom with the students. They engaged the children in captivating storytelling sessions, recounting tales that have been passed down through generations. Through these stories, Isaac and his peers learned about important aspects of Aboriginal history, Dreamtime stories, and the significance of the land and its connection to Aboriginal identity.

The Botany Rams Under 6's: A Promising Display of Skills and a Lesson in Resilience

Sports at a young age are more than just winning or losing; they shape character, nurture skills, and instill a love for the game. The recent performance of the Botany Rams Under 6's team may not have yielded the desired outcome, but it was a testament to their determination and spirit. Let's celebrate their efforts on the field and anticipate the growth that lies ahead as they return to training.

A Glimpse of Skills:

The Botany Rams Under 6's team took to the field with enthusiasm and a desire to demonstrate the skills they had been honing in their training sessions. From the very beginning, it was evident that these young athletes had worked hard to improve their game. Their passing, dribbling, and teamwork were impressive for players of their age, capturing the attention and admiration of the spectators.

An Unfortunate Day:

However, despite their commendable skills, the Botany Rams didn't experience the outcome they had hoped for on this particular day. Sometimes, luck doesn't favor even the most deserving players, and the opposing team capitalized on the opportunities that came their way. While disappointment may have lingered, the Rams should be proud of the way they handled the situation.

The Power of Perseverance:

What truly shone through on this day was the resilience of the Botany Rams. Despite the setbacks, they continued to give their all until the final whistle, never losing their determination or their positive attitude. Their commitment to the game and their unwavering effort deserve applause. It is through challenges like these that character is forged, and the Rams demonstrated the strength of their spirit.

A Lesson in Sportsmanship:

It's important to remember that sports are not solely about winning. They teach valuable life lessons, such as teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship. The Botany Rams Under 6's team exemplified these qualities by showing great sportsmanship throughout the match. They supported and encouraged each other, even in the face of adversity. This camaraderie and positive attitude are invaluable attributes that will serve them well on and off the field.

Looking Forward to Training:

As the match concluded, the focus now turns to the future. The Botany Rams Under 6's team will regroup, learn from their experiences, and channel their energy into their upcoming training sessions. This setback will undoubtedly fuel their determination to improve their skills, develop new strategies, and grow as individuals and as a team. The lessons learned from this match will only make them stronger and more prepared for future challenges.

Transurban WestConnex has been leading the way in integrating Aboriginal culture into the workplace. The company has been actively working to promote diversity and inclusion through a range of initiatives that celebrate and honour Aboriginal culture.

One of the most visible examples of Transurban's commitment to Aboriginal culture is the artwork that adorns the walls of many of its offices and buildings. These artworks, which are created by local Aboriginal artists, showcase the rich history and culture of the land on which Transurban operates. They serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of acknowledging and respecting the traditional custodians of the land.

Transurban WestConnex has also been actively engaging with local Aboriginal communities through a range of initiatives. This includes hosting Acknowledgment of Country performances for tunnel openings which provide an opportunity for employees and the public to learn more about the local culture and history. The company has also been supporting local Aboriginal artists by featuring their work at events and in promotional materials.

Transurban WestConnex and the KARI Foundation are celebrating a milestone five-year partnership, offering Aboriginal youth in Greater Sydney an opportunity to learn how to drive with free driving lessons and mentorship.

This unique partnership aims to help young people in the community obtain their driver’s license, a crucial skill for personal independence and economic mobility. The KARI Transurban Aboriginal Driving program will provide participants with access to both professional driving instruction and one-on-one mentoring from experienced community members.

The program is designed not only to develop driving skills but also to instill a sense of confidence and responsibility in the students. The curriculum will also include guidance on car maintenance, budgeting for vehicle costs, and road safety.

For many Aboriginal youth, the barriers to obtaining a driver's license can be significant, including financial barriers or lack of access to vehicles and driving instruction. The KARI Transurban Aboriginal Driving program aims to overcome these obstacles and open up new opportunities for young people to succeed. Transurban WestConnex and the KARI Foundation hope that this partnership will help bridge the gap in driving disparities within the Aboriginal communities and provide a pathway for young people to gain greater independence and economic empowerment.

The KARI Foundation's Greater Western Sydney Opportunity Hub has been making waves in the education and career development space. The KARI Foundation Mentors have been helping Aboriginal students from Western Sydney gain valuable skills, knowledge, and experience through a range of initiatives.

One of the key components of the program is the mentoring provided by Aboriginal cultural mentors. These mentors offer guidance and support to students, while also sharing their own cultural knowledge and traditions. This helps students gain a deeper understanding of Aboriginal culture and history, which is essential for building strong relationships with Indigenous communities.

Another important aspect of the program is the cultural leadership camp, which gives students the opportunity to learn about leadership and teamwork in a culturally relevant setting. The camp provides a safe and supportive environment for students to develop their skills, build relationships and explore their potential.

In addition to the mentoring and leadership camp, the KARI Foundation also offers careers pathways coaching and workplace tours. These initiatives help students explore different career options, gain practical skills and experience, and develop a deeper understanding of the world of work.

The results of the program so far have been impressive. Many students have reported feeling more confident and prepared for their future, with some even securing employment or further education opportunities as a result of their involvement in the program.

One student, Sarah, said that the program had been "life-changing" for her. "I've learned so much about Aboriginal culture and history, and I've also gained some really valuable skills and experience that I know will help me in the future," she said.

The success of the KARI Foundation's Greater Western Sydney Opportunity Hub highlights the importance of investing in education and career development initiatives that support students from diverse backgrounds. By providing mentoring, leadership development, and career pathways support, organisations like the KARI Foundation are helping to create a more inclusive and equitable society.

This program is funded by the NSW Government - Department of Training Services
